Why is Bitcoin being labeled an energy hog that damages the environment?

Bitcoin uses a method called Proof of Work to produce Bitcoins but the process is considered energy intensive. As of May 24th, 2021 global investment bank Goldman Sachs now considers Bitcoin an investable asset. Will this new asset class contribute to climate change or create new breakthroughs for renewable energy.
