Lamar Wilson joins the Breakfast Club

By Dawdu M. Amantanah

A bitter-sweet Bitcoin moment occurred on March 2nd, 2022. The Breakfast Club, a nationally syndicated radio show, invited Lamar Wilson to speak on the Basics Of Bitcoin and Crypto’s Impact On The Black Community. This interview is a massive deal in adopting bitcoin within the African American community for many reasons. The level of confusion and mistrust in the cryptocurrency space is evident beyond the disenfranchised.

Lamar’s jovial nature and natural voice on the microphone make it easy to digest highly technical jargon about bitcoin. In July 2020, The Breakfast Club was nominated for induction into the Radio Hall of Fame. So every informative word Lamar elucidated to DJ Envy, and Angela Yee on the misconceptions of bitcoin is historic for Black Bitcoin Billionaires and the culture as a whole.

The show has had a few guests talk about cryptocurrency and ideally bitcoin, but those people are not Lamar Wilson. Sporting a finance degree and decades of software engineering experience, Mr. Wilson is the de-facto bitcoin guy for black folk, in my opinion, hands down. He is not discrediting the numerous Black Bitcoin Billionaire educators joining Lamar like Bitcoin Zay and Najah Roberts. If you have traversed Twitter or ClubHouse, you may have heard of him, but his reach is just beginning.

During the show, DJ Envy seemed despondent towards bitcoin until Lamar broke down why bitcoin is the best financial foundation for digital assets you can buy. Envy wanted to know how you get the value out of bitcoin in a sea of other coins and crypto tokens. Angela showed her growing knowledge of bitcoin by stating, “Those other coins are not bitcoin.” Angela’s statement put a smile on Lamar’s face because his work is all about knowing the difference between bitcoin and alternative coins.

Bitcoin has a strong foundation rooted in mathematics, code, and encryption. Many other cryptocurrencies look good on the surface, but the underpinnings may be shaky. When it comes to your money, there is no room for lack of confidence. “You realize only 2% of the world owns bitcoin, and there will only ever be 21 million bitcoin. Just like the dope game when there is so little supply but high demand, that’s when the price goes up,” states Lamar.

The conversation went deep into the bitcoin fundamentals on multiple fronts. I think DJ Envy did a great job being a skeptic because he was asking a lot of the right questions someone doubtful of bitcoin’s potential would ask. The conversation shifted to scams and liquidating your money out of the bank versus out of bitcoin. People in Ukraine and Russia cannot get their money out of the bank, but people still trust the bank more than permissionless bitcoin. This is why individuals like Lamar exist to change that narrative of trusting the bank to being your own bank.

The true brilliance of this interview was a genuine relief for me as a blockchain advocate. The biggest gem Lamar Wilson quoted in the paradigm-shifting thirty-plus minutes he was on air was, “Would you buy a house on a foundation of sand? If the answer is no, you should buy into bitcoin because it is like buying a piece of Manhattan made of granite that will hold its value way past our lifetimes.
